Phil Cooper's musical interest became apparent in the Hip Hop era. At the tender age of 16 his love for the music motivated him to buy a pair of second hand turntables, at this point he learnt the skills of a dance DJ like mixing, cutting and scratching. With such a broad taste in music; Hip Hop, Jazz, Funk, Disco, Soul and Deep House, his musical style is 100 per cent underground. A reputable DJ in his own right, Phat Phil has appeared alongside the likes of Derrick Carter, DJ Sneak, Junior Sanchez, King Britt, and Roger Sanchez, and amongst his peers he is praised and complimented on his original style and choice of music.
During the summers of ´96, ´97 and ´98 he gained the respect of the Amnesia crowd in Ibiza after playing sets of up to 8 hours on the terrace as well as appearing on Radio 1 essential selection, he also commuted to and from BCM in Mallorca. The summer of 1999 saw Phil playing for the Ministry Of Sound in Ibiza, Djing for the first time at Pacha with Frankie Knuckles and also Djing for Cream in Cyprus. He has cornered the South American musical niche and has played at Creams nights in Argentina and Brazil. He has also played throughout San Francisco, playing at Funky Techno Tribe to 12,000 up for it clubbers, alongside Sneak, Junior Sanchez, Basement Jaxx, 4 Hero, DJ Rap, King Britt to name check but a few, also while in San Francisco he Djed at "Spundae" and on a boat party while cruising around Alcatraz and under the Golden Gate Bridge.
Phil has also been involved in the creation and continued success of the "Northern Soul" parties that have featured heavily in most dance music publications. What started as a Sunday wind down session has grown to take on all nights and venues that will allow Phil to push his more soulful musical style. Phil has held residencies with both Cream and The Ministry Of Sound and through both of these established giants has travelled the World spinning his unique musical blend in most of the Worlds famous and not so famous venues. As well as clubs, Phil has supported Justin Robertson's Lion Rock outfit and played at Creamfields and Homelands.
Phil has been involved in Dance Music from all angles, as owner of record shops and labels as well as a promoter of underground parties. Phil has had many of his DJ sets broadcast on radio stations such as Radio 1 and Kiss FM. Phil has also appeared in many club based programs as well as a featuring in "Hang The DJ", a film about DJs such as Roger Sanchez, Junior Vasquez and Danny Tenaglia.
In March 2002 Phil set up Plug Promotions Inc in Ibiza, a specialist promotion company based in Spain. The company looks after many of the Worlds leading labels including MAW, Compost, West End, Nordic Trax, Brique Rouge amongst others. The winter of 2004 Phil left Plug Promotions to continue his studies in the UK and concentrate on his NuNorthern Soul parties and Sick Trumpet events.
NuNorthern Soul continues to grow and has taken Phil to Copenhagen, Australia, Italy and throughout the UK, hosting back rooms for Type at The Cross, London, Chibuku Shake Shake, Liverpool and Nottingham.
Sick Trumpet is a monthly session that Phil does with fellow Chibuku resident Phil Charnock and Ste Hodge. With guests booked such as Rainer Truby, Blackbeard and Landslide amongst others, the stage has been set for an event that is set to be big. Sick Trumpet will be hosting the bar at Chibuku Shake Shakes NYE special in Liverpool.
